    Mart Rutjes is universitair docent Nederlandse geschiedenis bij de opleiding Geschiedenis. In zijn onderwijs en onderzoek richt hij zich op de ideologische en politiek-conceptuele ontwikkelingen in Nederland van de late 18e eeuw tot heden, in een transnationaal perspectief. Zijn bijzondere aandacht gaat uit naar politieke revoluties en publieke debatten over burgerschap, democratie en religie. Momenteel werkt hij aan een project over politieke repressie in Nederland in de lange negentiende eeuw, waarvoor hij een beurs van het Fonds Staatsman Thorbecke ontving (zie https://www.knaw.nl/nl/prijzen/toekenningen-fondsen-knaw/toekenningen-knaw-fonds-staatsman-thorbecke-2018).

    Van 2007 tot 2011 deed hij onderzoek naar de politieke debatten over democratie en burgerschap tijdens de Bataafse Republiek (1795-1806). In 2012 publiceerde hij hierover Door gelijkheid gegrepen. Democratie, burgerschap en staat in Nederland 1795-1801  (bij uitgeverij Vantilt). In 2015 redigeerde hij in het verlengde van deze studie, samen met Joris Oddens en Erik Jacobs, The Political Culture of the Sister Republics, 1794-1806. France, The Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy (Amsterdam University Press), een vergelijkende studie naar de politieke culturen van de Europese revolutionaire republieken. Over het republikeinse denken, specifiek het thema van verval, redigeerde hij met Joris Oddens en Arthur Weststeijn de bundel Discourses of Decline. Essays in honour of Wyger R.E. Velema (uitgeverij Brill, 2022).

    Van 2013 tot 2018 werkte hij als postdoc in het project Religion Renegotiated. Faith-Based Organisations and the State in the Netherlands since the 1960s aan een geschiedenis van de relatie tussen staat en religie in de twintigste eeuw. Hierover publiceerde hij onder meer in 2022 samen met James Kennedy het boek Gescheiden partners. Een geschiedenis van overheid en religieuze organisaties in Nederland (uitgeverij Prometheus).  

    Publicaties verschenen onder meer in Contributions to the History of Concepts, Journal of Church and State en Tijdschrift voor Geschiedenis (zie het tabblad Publicaties voor een overzicht).
