I work as a marketing associate at Insider One, a global marketing technology company that uses AI to help brands create personalised customer experiences across many channels. In my role, I help plan global content, manage editorial calendars for different countries, work closely with senior leaders on big marketing projects, and create AI-powered video content.

Studying in Amsterdam and London

In 2023, I finished my Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Communication Science at the UvA.

After that, I moved to London to complete a Master’s degree in Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). There, I focused on strategic communication, digital media, and how people form opinions about politics. This direction was firmly rooted in the academic interests I first developed during my Bachelor’s.

While my Bachelor’s gave me strong theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills, my Master’s helped me apply this knowledge to real-life situations. I worked on real-world case studies and learned how to think strategically and to communicate professionaly.

Together, these experiences helped me develop a strong academic background and useful professional skills, which helped me get my current job.

How sociology helps me in marketing

Studying sociology changed how I see the world and how I work. It taught me to think critically, question assumptions, and understand how stories and messages influence people.

In my daily marketing work, I use these skills when creating content, evaluating messages, planning campaigns for international audiences, and working on communication strategies. I draw directly on the analytical thinking, cultural awareness, and research skills I developed during my studies.

Learning in an international classroom

Some of my favourite memories of the UvA revolve around its international learning environment. Students from many countries shared different cultural, academic, and political perspectives, enriching every conversation.

These class discussions helped me become more nuanced and curious, which has been incredibly useful both in my personal life and at work.

Learning across different fields

My main advice for students is to explore different subjects and skills. Internships, workshops, and personal projects can be just as important as your classes, so make the most of these opportunities.

What set me apart in job interviews was not being an expert in just one area, but combining knowledge from sociology, communication, research, and marketing.
